Wardrobe contest (4) - Second top

This weekend I sewed above top, it's a Jalie top (2449) that I've sewn a couple of times already. TNT, from cutting to finishing only 1.5 hours. That was about all the time I had.
I decided that not all my tops must be special, and this graphic tulip print I bought last year from EmmaOneSock is just right in my black and white plan. But it requires a pattern without much details. So a simple addition to the plan, compensating for the amount of time the origami placket is taking.
Speaking about origami, it must be in the air. Have you seen Berry's beautiful shirt? I can now understand how much time there must be in that neckline!

Dit weekend een eenvoudige top gemaakt: Jalie 2449. Ik heb dit patroon al een paar maal gebruikt, dus snel opnieuw te doen. Anderhalf uur van knippen tot een afgerond geheel. Meer tijd had ik ook niet.
Niet alle shirts in m'n 'wardrobe' plan worden speciaal. Deze stof die ik vorig jaar bij EmmaOneSock heb gekocht past prima in mijn zwart/wit schema, maar heeft geen moeilijk gedetailleerd patroon nodig. Dit is dus een eenvoudige toevoeging aan het plan, en compenseert de origami op de bloes die ik aan het maken ben.
Origami zit volgens mij in de lucht. Heb je Berry's shirt gezien? Ik kan me nu voorstellen hoeveel tijd er in die halslijn moet zitten.

Wardrobe contest (3) - colors

These are the fabrics that I intend to use for my wardrobe. The fabric on the right will be a dress. As said in my previous post, very basic colors, that can be used with other colors too. The white t-shirt with twisted neckline is the first garment that will be part of the plan.
I'll probably change my original pattern ideas (who doesn't do that in a plan like this?).
The white blouse intended for the folded placket is cut, and I hope to do something on that this weekend. More on that next week.
The t-shirt on my plan with ruffled neckline I still intend to make, but from a plain dark red knit fabric, that is not in this plan (but can be combined with it easily).

Talking about combinations: that's why my wardrobe has such basic colors.
What about this combination? Black and white with a green jacket?

Dit zijn de stoffen die ik wil gebruiken voor mijn basisgarderobel. De stof rechts wordt een jurk. Zoals ik eerder al schreef, zijn het echte basiskleuren die ik makkelijk met andere kleuren kan combineren. Het witte t-shirt met gedraaide halslijn is het eerste onderdeel van het plan.
Waarschijnlijk ga ik de plannen/patronen wel aanpassen, maar dat lijkt me normaal in zo'n plan. De witte bloes met gevouwen voorkant is geknipt, daar hoop ik dit weekend iets aan te doen. Volgende week meer daarover.

Het t-shirt uit mijn plan met de v-hals met plooien wil ik nog maken, maar met donkerrode tricot. Die kleur maakt geen deel uit van het plan, maar kan er wel eenvoudig mee gecombineerd worden.

En over combinaties gesproken: daarom zijn mijn kleuren zo basis.

I've decided on my wardrobe colors. Nothing spectacular, it will be black, white and beige. Very basic colors that will form a nice basic wardrobe for me. With these basic colors it will be possible to add other colors, without having to make a whole new plan around that new color.
Needless to say that these 3 colors have also a lot of possibilities for clothes I already have.


Currently I'm working on a few tests for my wardrobe. Yesterday evening I made a muslin for the variation with the twist-top. The Diana Furstenberg blouse, pictured on the right of the storyboard. It was no success. The neckline/stand was good, but the position of the twist was not. I made two fronts, and it's very difficult to decide how to change it.



Then I did some folding to see how to make the details in above blouse. I didn't make an exact copy, just the square part.
Here the result and I've decided that this variation is definitely something to add to a blouse for my wardrobe.
But I must start sewing for real, otherwise I won't finish in time.




Q/A:
Nancy asked if I did the topstitching on the jacket by hand. No, I didn't, it was all done with my sewing machine.

Ann asked for the pattern for my panty: I've a basic pattern that was drafted to my own measurements. I make variations as I cut the lace and lycra. I was short on lycra for this set, that's how the front of this set came to be with only the small piece of lycra in the middle. Initially I intended to use more lycra.

And Helen: yes it's a Hellebore. I had to go on my knees to make a picture. I love these plants, I have another variation (the Argutifolius) and they flower for ages, even the bulbs are much later.
Ik heb eindelijk de kleuren voor m'n "wardrobe" bepaald: zwart, wit en beige. Zeer basis, maar voor mij een goede basis omdat het mogelijk is een andere kleur toe te voegen, zonder een heel nieuw plan rond de nieuwe kleur te maken. Ook passen veel kleren die ik al heb bij deze basis.


Op het moment ben ik een paart testen aan het maken. Gisteravond heb ik een proefmodel gemaakt voor de Diana Furstenberg bloes, rechts op het plan-overzicht. Geen succes, the halslijn en staander was wel goed, maar de draai in het voorpand zat niet op de goede plaats. Ik heb twee variaties gemaakt voor het voorpand, maar het is erg moeilijk om te zien hoe ik het patroon moet veranderen.



Daarna heb ik een paar vouw-testen gedaan zoals in de bovenstaande bloes. Geen exacte kopie, alleen het vierkante stukje.Dit is het resultaat en ik ga dit zeker opnemen in een bloes voor m'n "wardrobe". Maar dan moet ik wel beginnen met echt iets naaien.

Nancy Vroeg of ik het jasje met de hand doorgestikt heb. Het antwoord is nee, al het doorstikken is met de naaimachine gedaan.

Ann vroeg naar het patroon van de slip: hiervoor gebruik ik een basispatroon dat op m'n eigen maten is getekend. Ik maak variaties bij het knippen van het lycra en het kant. Dit keer had ik te weinig lycra, zodat er in het voordeel minder is verwerkt dan ik van plan was.

En Helen: ja het is een Helleborus, ik moest op m'n knieën om te fotograferen, maar ik ben gek op deze plantsoort, die heel lang bloeit zelfs als er nog niets anders bloeit (lang voor de bollen).

Thank you all for your kind comments (here or on Pattern Review) on my knock-off jacket. And it's so nice to read it's inspiring to some of you, because I'm certainly inspired by a lot of you too!
My daughter went to a friend yesterday whit her new jacket on, she's very happy with it.



After such a difficult project it was time for a TNT, and what else could that be after my disaster last week then a lingerie set, as I have hardly any light colours left. I didn't get much more done than one panty. It was such a lovely sunny, almost spring day here that we spent today for a long walk. I was so sorry I forgot my camera, as it was beautiful weather to take pictures.

Parting shot: spring is coming in my garden.



Allereerst wil ik iedereen bedanken voor de aardige reacties, zowel hier als op Pattern Review. Het is leuk om te lezen dat het anderen inspireert, ik wordt zelf ook zeer geïnspireerd door velen van jullie.
M'n dochter ging gisteren naar een vriendin met haar nieuwe jasje aan, ze is er echt heel blij mee.


Na zo'n moeilijk project was het tijd voor iets makkelijks en bekends. Na het was-ongeluk van vorige week kon dat alleen maar een lingerie-setje worden.
Ik kwam niet verder dan één slip, vandaag zijn we een lange wandeling gaan maken met dat heerlijke weer.

En de lente komt ook in m'n tuin op:

The knock-off contest really inspired me to do something I have wanted to do for a long time: copy a more difficult RTW garment. Untill now I only made minor changes to a pattern to change the look of it. The time frame for the contest was something I apparently needed to really do it now (there are always other patterns I want to try without much variation needed).

As this contest came on I let my daughter pick out something to knock off for her. This is the jacket she came up with. I'm so happy with the fact that you can enlarge pictures on a lot of sites so that you can see all the details.

Then the process of finding pattern and fabric started. While I thought that the fabric for the belt would be a major problem, I found a belt that I could take apart for the fabric on a local market, so I had that even before I had fabric or pattern.


I couldn't find the exact color for the jacket, as this had to be a fabric for a jacket, but thin enough to make all those pleats in the front and back and have a nice drape at the bottom. And of course it had to be a colour my daughter would agree upon. This dark green/brown fabric looks a bit like gabardine, but has far more drape.

I used size 36 for DD.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
Browsing through my pattern magazines this was the jacket that had some elements I could use: the collar/lapel closing at the right height and the bit puffed sleeves were right too.

I laid the front pattern pieces together and redrafted it. I omitted the princess line and made a dart on the side for shape. The bottom part of the pattern that has some ruffles were not what I needed, as the ruffles on my version would come from the pleats that are stitched to the height of the belt.
The sleeve cuff I drafted after the Vogue 2896 jacket, which I made for myself (2 years ago I think). It has exactly the same construction, so it was very easy to copy.


First I made a muslin from the pattern as it now was, to make sure that the basic pattern was OK for DD.
Now I could decide on the position for the belt (and thus the length of the pleats) and the length of the sleeves.

The next thing I did was drawing the pleats in the pattern. First I took a piece of paper and folded over and over again untill I was satisfied with the measurements. There are 8 pleats in the front pattern, and 3 in the back (making 22 pleats in total on the jacket), and the distance was crucial.

Finally construction of the jacket could be started. I made part of the pleats and took them out again as I was not satisfied with the result. After some tests I finally had the right distance for this fabric. Turn of cloth was important, though the fabric is not very thick. Clearly I should have done fabric tests and not paper tests before sewing the garment.
The only thing that I had to do after sewing all pleats was remark the seam lines for front and back, as the pleats took a tiny bit more space from the fabric than in paper version. I had cut enough seam allowances, so it was just a bit of extra work, but no harm done.
The rest of the jacket was not very difficult to construct.

The original jacket is unlined (as described on the site, you can't see it). But I lined my jacket to waist heigth and gave a hongkong finish to the visible seams.


The belt
As mentioned above, I took apart another belt for the fabric. DD came home two weeks ago after some shopping with a friend shouting: "Mummy, I found the construction for the belt for you". She bought this belt in a sale for 1 euro and knew that this was exactly what I was looking for. It has a very simple closure, that is used in swimwear! So I bought a swimwear closing and made the belt for the jacket.

Did it look like the original inspiration garment once you were done sewing with it?
I do think it does. But let the judges and voters say more on that.

What I didn't do was the bias binding on the edge of the jacket. I only saw this detail when I enlarged the picture a lot, and initially intended to make it like that, and even made the collar with binding.


But the "wrong" side of the collar is not so good, my experience with binding is very, very limited. And I was very afraid that I wouldn't get it right on both sides for the whole jacket, messing up the result. Then I took Vicky's (Hongkong Shopper) advice, and made a regular facing and topstitched the jacket.


Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
No, I won't sew it again, but it was a great experience. And I do certainly recommend to try to knock-off a rtw garment. It's fun, and not only for those with intermediate or advanced sewing skills. Try to knock of a simple t-shirt variation when you're an advanced beginner for example.

Conclusion
As said above, it was a great experience, and I like the result very much. This knock-off contest has inspired me to make a wardrobe-plan with tops with rtw-details too.

Nog even voor diegenen van jullie die misschien nog niet op de hoogte zijn: ik doe mee aan een wedstrijd op Pattern Review om iets na te maken uit de RTW (=ready to wear = confectie) collecties.

Deze wedstrijd heeft me werkelijk geïnspireerd om iets te doen wat ik al lang wilde: een moeilijker kledingstuk namaken. Tot nu toe paste ik wel een patroon aan, maar nooit erg ingewikkelde dingen. De deadline voor de wedstrijd was blijkbaar iets wat ik nodig had om het werkelijk te doen (er zijn altijd wel patronen die ik wil uitproberen zonder dat ik veel hoef aan te passen.

Toen deze wedstrijd aangekondigd werd heb ik m'n dochter iets laten uitzoeken om voor haar na te maken. En dit is het jasje dat ze uitgezocht heeft. Heel handig die websites waar je de details uitvergroot kunt laten zien. tails.

Wetend wat het moest worden begon de zoektocht naar patroon en stof. Hoewel ik dacht dat de stof voor de riem het grootste probleem zou zijn, vond ik heel snel een riem op de markt waarvan ik de stof als basis kon gebruiken. Dus dat had ik uiteindelijk het eerste!


De exacte kleur voor het jasje kon ik niet vinden, het was lastig omdat het soepel moest zijn voor de plooien en de rimpels, maar toch weer stevig genoeg voor een jasje. Bovendien moest de kleur goedgekeurd worden door dochterlief.

Patroonmaten:
Mijn basis was het Burda patroon no. 103 uit november 2006. Dit is de tekening van het patroon.

Voor m'n dochter heb ik 36 als basis genomen

Patroon en ontwerpveranderingen:
Ik ben door al m'n tijdschriften heen gebladerd op zoek naar een jasje waarvan ik elementen kon gebruiken. Dit jasje had de kraag die op de goede hoogte sluit en de iets gepofte mouwen die ik nodig had.

De patroondelen voor het voorpand heb ik aan elkaar gelegd en opnieuw getekend. De verticale naad heb ik weggelaten en de coupenaad naar de zijkant verlegd.
Aan de onderkant zaten rimpels die ik niet nodig had omdat de rimpels uit het jasje het resultaat zijn van de plooien erboven.
Voor de manchet van de mouw heb ik het patroon van het Vogue jasje nr. 2896 gebruikt, dat ik zo'n twee jaar geleden voor mezelf gemaakt heb. Het heeft exact dezelfde constructie, dus heel eenvoudig na te maken


Eerst heb ik het aangepaste patroon gemaakt van een reststofje, om te kijken of het klopte. Daarmee kon ik ook de plaats voor de riem die iets boven de taille zit bepalen en de lengte van de mouwen.

De volgende stap was het intekenen van de plooien in het patroon. Na lang vouwen met papier was ik tevreden over de maten. Er zitten 8 plooien in het voorpand en 3 in het achterdeel (22 in totaal dus) en de afstand en breedte was cruciaal.

Toen kon eindelijk het maken beginnen. Na het stikken van een aantal plooien was ik niet tevreden en haalde alles weer uit. Blijkbaar nam de stof toch meer ruimte dan gedacht. Ik had dus beter stoftesten dan papiertesten kunnen maken.
Na het naaien van alle plooien moest ik de patroondelen hertekenen op de stof, vanwege de extra ruimte die de stof in de plooien nam. Gelukkig had ik genoeg zoomruimte aangeknipt zodat het alleen wat extra tijd kostte, maar verder was er niets mis.
De rest van het jasje was niet zo moeilijk te maken.

Het originele jasje is niet gevoerd (dat kun je in de advertentie niet zien, maar staat beschreven. Maar ik vond het mooier dat tot de taille wel te doen en heb de zichtbare naden op de zgn "hong kong" manier afgewerkt (weet iemand hoe dit in het Nederlands genoemd wordt? Ik ken alleen de Engelse term).



De riem
Zoals ik hierboven al vertelde, heb ik een andere riem uit elkaar gehaald voor de stof. M'n dochter kwam twee weken geleden thuis en riep luid: "Mam, ik heb de manier voor de sluiting van het riempje gevonden." Ze kocht deze riem voor 1 euro, en wist precies dat ik daar naar op zoek was. Er is een bikini-sluiting gebruikt.

Zag het eindresultaat eruit zoals het orgineel?
Ik denk het wel, maar straks mag de jury en alle PR leden die stemmen daar meer over zeggen.

Het originele jasje had een biais-band afwerking (dezelfde stof maar schuin van draad). Dat heb ik niet gedaan omdat ik daar heel weinig ervaring mee heb. Ik zag het detail alleen na heel veel uitvergroten van het origineel, en ik was bang dat ik het eindresultaat zou verprutsen door een techniek waar ik niet genoeg ervaring mee heb. Heb het wel op de kraag eerst geprobeerd, maar de onderkant zag er niet zo mooi uit als deze bovenkant.


Ik heb Vicky's (Hongkong Shopper) advies ter harte genoemen, en op een normale manier afgewerkt en doorgestikt.


Zou je het opnieuw maken? Raad je het anderen aan?
Nee, ik maak het niet opnieuw, maar vond dit een geweldig leuke ervaring. En ik zou zeker proberen om het ook te doen. Als je nog niet zo ervaren bent begin dan gewoon met een variatie op een t-shirt.

Conclusie
Zoals ik al zei, het was een leuke ervaring en ik ben zeer tevreden met het resultaat. Deze wedstrijd heeft me al geïnspireerd om een garderobe-plan te maken (volgende wedstrijd op PR) waarin ik een aantal details in blouses en t-shirts ga verwerken.

Just a quick post to show a few pictures of the almost finished jacket. Quite a time-consuming project I can tell you. Buttonholes and belt left to be done, and attaching the sleeve lining. Though the RTW jacket I'm copying has no lining, I did feel it was a bit neater to add this. I added the lining to waist height. I'll make more detailed pictures of this jacket when DD is wearing it and from the inside this weekend.
Even een snel berichtje om een paar foto's te laten zien van het jasje dat nu bijna af is. Het is nogal een tijdrovend project kan ik je vertellen. Knoopsgaten nog en de riem die erbij moet, en de voering van de mouwen moet nog vastgezet. Het originele jasje dat ik namaak heeft geen voering, maar ik vind het mooier als dat er wel in zit. Ik heb het tot de taille gedaan. Dit weekend zal ik foto's maken van m'n dochter met het jasje en van de binnenkant.

First I want to thank all of you who commented with nice words and tips on my last post about the unfortunate wash-event. I followed all links and did try to get the colour out with a special product, but to no avail.
This is a picture of the difference in colour (because I had a lot of fabric at the time, I made two bra's of the same lycra and lace combination, only half a year ago).

Well, it happened, I will be sewing new sets soon I think.


On to the really sewing related matters at hand. Not a lot of time for sewing, but the pleats in the knock-off jacket are ready. Here a few pictures. It's getting shape now, and I think I will have this ready by the end of the week.


Time to think about the wardrobe contest. I did a lot of snoop shopping (thanks for the links some of you posted in the comments, I have quite a few new bookmarks and ideas, but most of the ideas are for another time!) and the plan at the moment is the following, and I've not yet decided on the blouse yet.



The problem for me are the colors. It's impossible to make this all from fabrics I already have, as I don't have a large stash. Spring collections of fabric are only just coming in the shops here, so I have to wait a little. But it will make my decision and realisation time very short, I think I won't be able to start before the end of February, which makes my actual sewing time only two months (it has to be ready before the 26th of April for me, as we are then leaving for a little vacation in the UK!). Perhaps a bit too ambitious, but we'll see (perhaps I must write on my blog less, and sew more?)

A last shot: I love to grow some of my garden plants from seed. Today I bought some seed packets, and hope for of a good spring/summer to grow them.

Ik heb geprobeerd om de kleur uit m'n was te krijgen, maar dat is helaas niet gelukt. Zie hieronder het ongelukkige resultaat van vrijdag. Een half jaar geleden heb ik beide bh's gemaakt (ik had veel stof, en maakte twee verschillende van hetzelfde materiaal).

Het is gebeurd, binnenkort zal ik vast wat nieuws naaien, terug naar het echte naaiwerk. De plooien in het "namaak" jasje zijn klaar. Hier een paar foto's van het resultaat tot zover. Ik hoop het eind van de week af te hebben.


Tijd om aan de wardrobe contest op Pattern Review na te denken. Ik heb veel inspiratie op het internet gezocht en dit is het idee op het moment. De blouses/shirts zijn geen kant-en-klaar patronen maar afbeeldingen van internet-winkels, en de patroonnummers zijn de patronen die ik als basis wil gaan gebruiken.



Vooral de kleuren zijn het probleem op het moment. Ik kan niet alles uit m'n stof-voorraad maken, want die is niet zo groot. En in de winkels zijn nog niet veel voorjaarsstoffen aanwezig, dus moet ik nog even wachten met beginnen. Wel lastig, want dat betekent dat ik maar twee maanden overhoud om dit te maken.

Een laatste foto: ik vind het leuk om plantjes te zaaien. Vandaag een paar zaak-pakketjes gekocht. En nu maar hopen op een goed voorjaar/zomer om ze te laten groeien.

Bad start to the weekend

Most of you will know that I like sewing lingerie. But there were no immediate plans to sew lingerie the next month or two, as I have so many other plans and a drawer full of nice sets. But I gave myself some excuse this afternoon to go to the stores to buy new fabrics and sew new things! This is good and bad.
What happened? I do have quite a drawer full of lingerie. I hate washing by hand, so I always wash in the delicate program in my washing machine, with my bra's in separate bags to prevent damage to my machine. And I'm careful to separate white and very light colours from the darker colours. Yesterday I had put a dark blue ribcord fabric in the washing machine, then the phone rang, .....I forgot about it and it was not washed.
This afternoon I put all my white and light coloured lingerie in the machine, NOT NOTICING the blue fabric, that was never washed before. Can you imagine how the lingerie came out?
I really could cry, there were a few items that were old and to be changed for something new soon. But there were also a few new, very nice things in it that I love to wear... Lost at least 4 bra's with accompanying panties, 2 white camisoles and 2 sets from my daughter. Very bad start to the weekend.
Een aantal van jullie weet dat ik graag lingerie naai. Maar ik was voorlopig niet van plan wat te naaien, omdat ik zoveel andere plannen heb en een la vol met leuke setjes. Maar vanmiddag heb ik mezelf een excuus gegeven om nieuwe stof te kopen en nieuwe lingerie te naaien. Dat is leuk en niet leuk.
Wat is er gebeurd? Ik heb een la vol met lingerie. En omdat ik een hekel heb aan handwas, was ik alles op het wolwasprogramma van mijn wasmachine, met de bh's in aparte waszakjes.
Maar .....gisteren heb ik een donkerblauwe ribcord in de machine gedaan, maar niet gewassen. De telefoon ging en ik vergat 't.
Vanmiddag heb ik vanmiddag al mijn witte en lichte lingerie in de machine gedaan, en de blauwe ribcord niet meer opgemerkt. Kun je je voorstellen hoe de lingerie eruit zag na het wassen?
Ik kon echt janken, er zaten een paar oude dingen bij die ik binnenkort toch wilde vervangen, maar ook veel dingen die ik graag draag en nog heel mooi waren... Zeer zeker verloren zijn 4 bh's met bijpassende slips, 2 witte hemdjes en2 sets van m'n dochter. Een zeer slechte start van het weekend.

Twisted neckline and jacket

The Ottobre t-shirt is ready. I took off the neckline and made it again with 10% decrease in length, and this was much better.
In the picture below you can see a schematic drawing of how to make such a neckline. The effect of course depends on the width of the neckline and the distance between the points. In my t-shirt I used 7 cm distance.



And this is the effect on a much smaller strip of fabric.



Knock-off jacket
Tonight I took out all pleats of the back, as I was not satisfied with the result. Then there is only one solution: take it out (I learned a lot over the years, my mother, who regularly reads my blog can confirm that. It was quite different when I was 16!)

This is one front piece, done in the way I now think it should be done. Though those pleats are a bit difficult to take good pictures of.
BTW: I'm considering Vicky's suggestion of topstitching the jacket and not doing the binding. It's a hell of a job to get it right on both sides, which is necessary for the front/collar.




Het t-shirt met de gedraaide hals is klaar (sorry voor het niet in het Nederlands schrijven de laatste keren, het kost extra tijd om het in twee talen te doen, ik zal m'n best doen om het tweetalig in stand te houden). De basis is een Ottobre t-shirt.

Eerst heb ik de halslijn verdiept zoals ik het wilde, daarna daar weer 5 cm afgehaald. Met een 12 cm brede strook de halslijn gemaakt, op de manier die ik in het onderstaande schema heb gebruikt. Ik heb steeds een afstand van 7 cm gebruikt.



En zo ziet het eruit met een smaller stuk stof.



Knock-off jasje
Vanavond heb ik alle plooien uit de rug gehaald, ik was er niet tevreden over. Dan is er maar één oplossing: uithalen. ('k Heb een hoop geleerd in de loop der jaren. Mijn moeder (die mijn weblog regelmatig leest) kan dat bevestigen! Ik reageerde wel anders toen ik 16 was.)

Dit is een van de voorpanden. En ik denk dat ik nu de juiste manier heb gevonden. Maar het is wel lastig fotograferen.

Overigens overweeg ik om het jasje door the stikken, zoals Vicky suggereerde, i.p.v. af te biezen. Het is zo moeilijk om het aan beide kanten mooi te krijgen.

The first picture is the jacket I want to make for the PR knock-off contest, as I posted earlier. BWOF 11-2006-103 is the jacket I took as starting point. This mainly because of the collar and the puffed sleeve. Otherwise this jacket has not much similarities with the jacket I want to make. After making a muslin this weekend (I'll post a picture later of DD with muslin)I adapted the pattern further.
There was a moment that I regretted my promise, as this was no easy task.
For the sleeves I looked at Vogue pattern 2896, which has the same cuff.


Tonight I sewed the back and part of the collar. The edges have binding, which I haven't often done. This is going to be one of the more difficult projects. Quite a challenge.

Twisted binding

There are a lot of things I'm doing at the moment (not complying to my own rule not to have more than 3 items to work on): knock-off jacket, January BWOF jacket for myself (both muslins sewn this weekend), wardrobe contest, white blouse for DD, t-shirt for a niece. Pff, I'll write about these things later, I'm trying to take one step at a time.

Tonight I made the twisted neckline for the t-shirt I want to make in the PR-wardrobe contest. Using a Ottobre pattern for the t-shirt and the tip on a twisted neckline written by Liana on PR. I used a 5 cm (2 inch) wide neckline, and moved the fabric each 6 cm.
The result is not quite right, it might be better to have more fabric length in the neckline. I decreased 15% and think that is too much. Think I'm going to take the binding off again and try again, there is some fabric left.

PS: did you see the sweet comment my daughter wrote in the jeans review? She saw me making a comment, and knew how to do it then. So a little later she added her comment. Was a sweet surprise when I saw that, it really moved me.

I just finished the jeans for DD and she is very happy with them. And in the end, I'm happy with the result. In one of the comments Laura asked me why I didn't like making jeans. And that mainly has to do with the fabric and the thickness of layers. I don't often break needles, but this pair has cost me one extra jeans needle and one topstitch needle. But I must say, this is the first jeans I've sewn since I have my Bernina sewing machine, and it was not as bad as I feared.
For all topstitching I used Güterman upholstery thread (grey bobbin) and topstitch needle. Only for the buttonholes and the tiny zigzag on the belt loops I used normal sewing tread of the same color number. The thick thread always gives me trouble there. The buttonholes I sewed twice.
I'll write a complete review for PR tonight or tomorrow. En ik ben zelf ook wel tevreden over het resultaat. In een van de reacties vroeg a href="http://laurasewingroom.blogspot.com/">Laura wat ik niet leuk vond aan het maken van jeans. Dat heeft voornamelijk te maken met de stof en de dikte van alle lagen. Ik breek niet vaak naalden, maar dit project heeft me weer een extra jeans- en topstitchnaald gekost. Dit was de eerste jeans die ik gemaakt heb sinds ik een Bernina machine heb, en het ging niet zo slecht als ik dacht dat het zou zijn.
Voor alle doorgestikte naden heb ik Güterman garen gebruikt (grijze spoel, iets dunner dan het officiele doorstikgaren). Alleen voor de knoopsgaten en de de kleine zigzagsteken op de riemlusjes heb ik gewoon naaigaren gebruikt in exact dezelfde kleur. Daar heb ik altijd problemen mee bij het gebruik van dik garen. De knoopsgaten heb ik twee keer genaaid.
