Meeting other sewing-enthusiasts

After spending a lovely time a week ago with Valerie and Sheila in Zeeland, this weekend was another one filled with meeting other sewing enthusiastic ladies. Pauline (from P’s thrifty sewing blog) was in The Hague for work and came on Friday afternoon to stay with me. We had a lovely time chatting and sewing. Pauline wanted to make a bra and as I made a few before, I did help her a bit.

After a few hours the bra was finished. We found out that my tnt bra pattern fitted Pauline, she only had to widen the back a bit, so we used that pattern (Sewy Rebecca). She used a kit she bought before with a few additions from my stash.
I’m sure she’ll be making more bra’s in the future. I always warn that lingerie making is addictive!

The Sunday we met with 3 of the ladies who were also in Brussels and the November meeting last year.

We visited a fashion exhibit in Arnhem, which was small and not very exiting. But we had a lovely day, coffee and lunch before going to the exhibit and tea after, so a lot of time to talk sewing and making plans for (near) future sewing meetings.


Joana brought quite a few magazines and the new Marfy catalogue to browse through.
I can’t tell you how much inspiration I got this weekend from talking about each others projects, seeing the pictures either in magazines or on Pauline’s Ipad. My head is filled with ideas.
It was sooooo much fun. Thank you ladies for a wonderful time.

Red set

One of the projects I worked on last week. Started and finished in one day with time to spare in the evening. And did you know that you don’t see red when wearing a white garment? My friend Valerie hadn’t heard of this. I showed it with a white t-shirt which was not very thick and she was convinced immediately. It didn’t show through!

When worn it looks an all lace bra in the front, but it isn’t. The lace has virtually no stretch, so a band that has some stretch is needed.

The side/back panel is interfaced with powernet, to give it the stability I like and need.


The finished set. The fit is perfect, though talking with Valerie who sews lingerie too  made me change the pattern slightly for the next one, to get my straps a bit more to the center. I’m quite used to this placement, but will try to see and feel the difference.




Matching panty, I made two, excactly the same. Not a lot of lace left to play with. 


The pattern for the bra is the Sewy Rebecca, with a few changes for fit and a downward hike in the back. All fabric and notions came from a kit from Kantje Boord in Amsterdam. The panty is a much used self drafted pattern.

Sewing friends

I spent most of last week in the holiday home of my friend Valerie, who was there most of the time as well. On Friday night we were joined by Sheila from Brussels. It was the most agreeable week and weekend. We went (snoop) shopping, visited a rose garden,  I went for a lovely bicycle ride to the town of Domburg. It’s been such fun. Of course some sewing was done too.

Can you imagine what a house looks like when 3 sewing ladies occupy it? It’s a mess in no time. Paper, scissors, pins, fabric, patterns…. everywhere. I confess a lot of it was mine.

I did achieve quite a bit:

• Make a new set of lingerie, completely finished! This is exceptional, as I usually sew my panties much later and the bra doesn’t get worn in weeks or months ;).
• Hemmed my tan linen trousers, made a buttonhole and attached the button. A ufo finished after three weeks, so silly to leave it that long with so little to do still.
• Sewed two blue panties, to match the bra I made in February, so now I can start wearing it. You see it takes a bit of time sometimes.
• Started a special skirt.
• Had my measurements taken to be able to draft a pattern.
• Got inspired by sewing together, talking about sewing and browse books and the internet (did you see this post about…, remember this jacket by…, have you seen the video of…)

And next weekend there’s another sewing related visit: Pauline is in The Netherlands for work and will stay with me from Friday. We wanted to go to Kantje Boord, but this is closed for holidays unfortunately. We will be sewing some lingerie anyhow probably.

Patrones top

What do you do when it’s pouring with rain and the wind is blowing like it’s deep fall? Sew a summer top!

Two years ago (already that long ago??) I made this Patrones top and posted in this post.

The pattern is made for a woven fabric, cut on the bias. I bought a knit fabric this spring (Amsterdam fabric market on Monday again) for a summer dress.

Thought I might have enough fabric for a sleeveless summer dress and a top. I love cowl neck tops and remembered this pattern. Tried it with this as the result. I had to take it in on the sides and perhaps took a bit too much out the back. My fabric is thin and has a lot of stretch. The bias cut woven top was just right, but in a knit less ease was necessary. What a difference a fabric makes.

I couldn't cut the back on the fold, there is a seam there. Nothing to worry about. The dress is cut out as well, hope to make that this weekend. This top was a one-hour project. It brigthened my mind a bit (which was necessary too). The colors in the fabric are black, white, blues and greens, it doesn’t show too well on the screen.

Some easy projects

A collection of pictures to update what I made in the past weeks. As I said in a previous post, I haven’t sewn as much in such a short time in months (over a year?) Work in progress now is a tan pair of trousers, in a color that is in the print of these tops, making more combiantions possible.

Feeling a bit more comfortable (colors, I’m so boring in my preferences) in this combination with the blue sorbetto top of last year and a rtw off-white jeans.

 

Not completely ignoring the trend for bold, bright colors in a red pair of trousers. A copy of a copy of a rtw pair I had years ago. The original tan copy lasted me for years and were worn till it came apart. This fabric still is a bit crisp and needs a few wearings/washings to hang like the previous one did.

Out of my usual color scheme

The absence of spring/summer weather in the past weeks must have had its effect on me. When I was in a shop for a few notions only, I came out with this fabric. Not my usual color scheme, not my usual print. I seldom use flower prints. And yet, it’s a very nice quality, thin cotton which was easy to sew and I made it up in only a few hours. Sometimes it’s nice to make something totally different.

I omitted the pocket and back detail. Of course the picture isn’t showing all details clearly. When reading the instructions for the cuff width, I was surprised that they had a finished with of 8 cm. Too wide for what I wanted, so I made the cuff only 4 cm wide and lengthened the sleeve with 4 cm. On the top I used a size 40, tapering down to size 42 at bust level for the front only. No real fba, but worked like a charm. This pattern definitely is my new tnt for a basic blouse.

The pattern has a double yoke, I didn’t follow Burda’s instructions how to construct this, a neat way to do this is described in this post by Summerset, and I used the instructions as found in the book Easy guide to sewing blouses by Conny Long.

Vogue 1223 – a summer dress

I finished the summer dress, I took out the extra width in the side seams only and it was quite good that way. Though I’m not that crazy about the pattern, even if the size would have been good in the first place.

On the right side there are long pleats that give shape to the bodice and extra space to the skirt. The pleats are there on the left front panel too, but only stitched partially.  The instructions are for sewing from the bottom and top till the large squares.

 

It gave a strange effect and I closed the whole pleat, which in the end would have meant the left front could have been a piece without folds.

On the picture on the envelope you can see the pleats, but I only noticed them while constructing this pattern.
 

The neckline is deep, also visible on the envelope, for me this is a dress now that I can't wear easily without something underneath. Not a good feature for a summer dress like this. My photographer (aka as dear daughter) took pictures with a lot of space around me, so I had to take crop quite a bit. Hence the not so large pictures. You’ll get the idea.

Other garments have been sewn in the meantime too! I’ve been productive for the first time in months. Stay tuned.
