Inspiration for pants

ETA: I'm not going to make the actual Vogue pattern, I don't have it but am going to change a pattern to achieve that look.

I need some more pants, as I live in them during the winter. I'd like to buy one or two, but that is a mission impossible. From experience I know that searching for rtw pants is HIGHLY frustrating for me. It takes hours to shop and try on, and nothing fits, so I go home empty handed. In the same time it takes I can sew a basic pair that does fit (without too much details that is).

But as I said in my last post, I like the RTW details, so I went snoop shopping on the internet. Granted, takes time too, but no frustration. Though there are some shops with models where I think that almost everyone without anorexia would be frustrated. Who would ever fit in their pants and still eat normal? I'm diverting.

A general observation: the style is wide or skinny. The last is out of the question for me, if not for the way I'm build, then my age doesn't suit skinny styles. But I like wide pants, they suit me well.

In the bottom left corner a Vogue pattern I like, boot-legged and with welt pocket details. It suggests being a bit low on the hips, though I've browsed Pattern Review for the reviews, and think that might not be too much. But the details can easily be added to another pattern.

The waist band details are nice, I particularly like the small welt pocket and the wide waist band in the middle, the picture with the blue blouse.

Cuffs are a trend too, not too sure I'm going to make them.

And the last picture: welt pockets in the back. I used them in my black pair of pants, and love those. These will certainly be part of my next pair of pants, that will be black/white fabric that looks a bit like the picture on the right with the cuff.

I might do the welts in black, or would that give too much contrast?

  1. I notice that most of those RTW pants have belt loops, as well. No belts, just loops. I, also, am planning some new pants and enjoyed seeing your research. Thanks!

  2. Thanks for doing the research for me! I made my last pair with cuffs. More experimental than anything else. Once I master that back welt, it will go on everything I make I suspect.

  3. Great research. I have been doing the same thing looking for details to add to my tnt pant. I bought that Vogue Alice and Olivia pattern too,but only for the details. I also found some pants with vertical double welt pockets and the back welt. I haven't seen that vertical pocket on high end pants in a while. Net a Porter is a great site for seeing details. I am not tall enough, or thin enough for cuffs. But the wide leg are great on me too.

  4. Thanks for posting this--I really enjoyed looking through the fruits of your labors and getting ideas for my next pair.

I like the idea for your back welts, I just know that my skills aren't up to it yet!

I recently made the Alice & Olivia pattern and then talked my mother into making them too. We have different body shapes (I'm in my 20s, she, her 50s) and were both excited about the fit right out of the envelope. I don't know if that has ever happened before!

  6. I'm planning to get that Vogue the next time they go on sale. No cuffs for me - I'm short and cuffs don't do me any good.

  7. Sigrid, good plans, the idea of black welts sounds really great, maybe black buttons too, or belt loops?

  9. Those are some nice details you've spotted. Good luck with the Vogue pattern. I don't have much luck buying RTW trousers, either, and Vogue patterns do not do me any favors, either. I have to do too much altering to make them work, while Patrones seems to fit me well with only some minor adjustments (grading down only one size between waist and hip!). I'm not sure about the dark welt trim on the grey. If you wear a blouse tucked in, I think the black would immediately draw the eye to the seat of the pants and emphasize that area. Which, might or might not be something you'd want.

  10. Those pants are all very appealing. But I am with you on the wider rather than skinnier pants.

  11. Those are really nice details! I love the welt on the back too and leg cuffs work very well if you are tall!
