Plans – or how do I get back to sewing?

My own feeling on my sewing in this year is that it didn’t make for a lot of new, wearable garments. I declared a lot as wadders, or have long periods of sewing very little. I said it before, it’s the way it is, the way life is. But I would very much like to have my old enthousiasm back, trying new things, new patterns, new techniques, try to knock off a garment etc. I thought it might be a good idea to make a little plan, to get really started again (and don’t hold me up to it, it’s very subject to change ;))

The plan:

  • new tops, knits and woven (I need some brighter colors in my winter wardrobe, the amount of black tops is huge),. On the list are definitely this top from the latest Ottobre woman magazine

and this one, the Jenny shirt from StyleArc. I only ordered the pattern yesterday, a new pattern company to try! As it must make its way from Australia to Europe, think it will take at least a week to get here.

A lace top, inspired by this post from pdiddly. I will combine a navy lace with some silk I bought in Brussels as under layer and use the Sorbetto top pattern. If there’s enough lace (hope, hope), I might make a cardigan of it too.

  • a skirt, knock off from Dries van Nooten, that I published about earlier.  Next weekend I will meet a lot of ladies at a fabric market here in The Netherlands (most of them were in Brussels in April too, but also a few new people to meet So looking forward to it ladies!). I defnitely will try to find fabrics for this skirt.

  • a pair of jeans. I will join the Lynne’s Jeans sew along, must get me started on jeans. I’ve traced a rtw pair a long time ago to copy it, but never got any further then that.

That’s enough plans for the moment. I hope to finish these before the end of the year. Being optimistic!

  2. Yes, my mojo has been a bit weak lately. Like you said, it is what it is.

But I love your plan! And, I really really love Style Arc patterns. I don't have that one and look forward to seeing yours!

  4. You have some beautiful garments planned! Thanks for pointing the way to the jeans SAL. I always find that to be helpful for a flagging mojo, too.

  5. If you have enough clothes to wear, not feeling like sewing is not that bad... Do as you heart says.

  7. Sigrid, welcome to the "sewing slump" club, I'm a member from time to time. Sometimes I just can't get inspired. It took a conference at ETAC (education of textile arts) to pull me out of it. You have a good plan and you are a talented sewer, I look forward to seeing your next piece.

  8. That first one is on my list as well (so many things to do... I need more hours in a day!)

    Love the lacey twinset!

  12. I think sewing is a hobby simply, if this is stressful ... bad.
I hope that hour sewing mojo back soon because you have a wonderful selection of clothes in the project.

  13. I like plans! Sorry you've been feeling that way, if it helps I have been too for the better part of the year. Oddly, a simple Oliver + S shirt for my daughter rekindled my fire. I realized I'd been over-complicating my sewing and it sucked all the joy out of it.

  14. I need a sewing plan too. Naptime begins and I pull out things to sew, then realize my fabric supply/pattern needs don't match up. My fingers are crossed that the meetup and trying a new pattern compnay help jump-start your enthusiasm.

  15. I too get discouraged when I put time and effort into making a garment and don't feel happy with the result. It is comforting to find that this is completely normal!

I loved your Chanel-type jacket so they really have not all been wadders!

Why not make a tried and tested favourite flattering pattern in a lovely fabric, either new or from stash? IMO a really successful project is what you need now as encouragement - you don't always have to make new designs.

Or sort out and stroke a few of the fabrics from your stash and take swatches of the ones you like the most with you to look for coordinated fabrics. Planning time can be enjoyable too.

  16. It sounds like you're getting your enthusiasm back--that's a great list for Fall. I am sure the fabric market will inspire you even more!

  17. I think you have a great plan! It is comforting for me to read that others have also had times of less enthusiasm, as it just reaffirms that life always has its ups and downs -- and that eventually we'll get back on the up-side and the creativity and enthusiasm will flow again!

  18. I love to see what others are even thinking about sewing. The Ottobre top is lovely and tops are always a great idea. It's fun to make a plan even if they go off-track.

  19. I love seeing other people's plans, but personally I find having a plan saps my sewing mojo. I prefer random creativity.

  20. I think I shall have a head-to-head with that Ottobre. Do you accept the challenge?
