Pants – waistband

After one more (undocumented) muslin I decided I could make the pants in the final fabric. They’re almost finished, the lining has to be sewn and set in. Buttonhole, button and hemming are then the last steps, planned for tomorrow evening. The first picture again shows a wrinkle.I’m not showing it yet, it also needs a good pressing and I’d like to wait till it’s completely finished for the final evaluation.

For the finishing of the waistband I was inspired by the book ‘Making trousers’ from David Page Coffin. I’m not overwhelmed by this book (and certainly not by the irritating music on the accompanying dvd, which you can’t turn off first time, as sometimes there is a tiny bit of spoken information) but it is inspirational, what as such is good. One of the eye-openers was to make the waistband on the fold and make the inside waistband shorter. It makes for less seam allowances when sewing the button hole. Hope you get the idea from these pictures (as said, lining still to be added).

  1. t saw this on a Vogue pattern a few years ago and now I alter all my waistbands to be this way. It was definitely one of those aha! moments.

  2. I can see the benefits of a waistband on the fold, but I can't give up my curved waistbands. There was a thread on PR discussing folded waistbands as part of the jeans sew-a-long last year. I think it was by Rocket Boy. It is worth reading, but again, I love the curved band.

  3. I have seen this technique before and I always say, oh I need to do that and then I forget to redraft the waistband. Next pair! This looks really nice. I love the print contrast too.

  4. The contrasting facing is cute. And I like seeing a little snippet of basting thread. The process is the fun part, though a nice pair of pants will be good to have, too :)

  5. Dear fellow seamstresses,

I've been following this great blog for a while but never dared to comment. I'm so sorry that the first time I write here has

to be to ask for help!

I need a FREE sewing pattern to make a cowl neck sweater (like THIS ONE). I have a fancy dress

(costume) party on Saturday 12 December 2009. I must go dressed as Velma from Scooby Doo.

Unfortunately orange is not in fashion this year and I can't find an orange cowl neck sweater in shops.

I've thought of finding some orange fabric and sewing this sweater myself, but I don't want to spend money on a pattern (I

never wear cowl neck sweaters). But I can't find any on the web and I'm running out of time, the party is on Saturday and I'm

a beginner at sewing so it will take me long to sew it!

If anyone could help me with this, I would be grateful forever (and join his/her blog, of course!)

I'm sorry if this cry for help bothered anyone, normally I don't do this, but I'm desperate now.

Thank you for brightening up my days with your contributions to the sewing blogosphere!

    Greetings, Rebeca

  7. I have been doing this CF fold with a short inner band on my pants, too, based on Ann Taylor does their RTW. makes for a really nice low bulk finish!

Thanks for the reminder to look at the DVD w/ DPC's book. I've read through the book, but haven't yet made my way to the DVD...

  8. Thank you for this information. I'll have to give it a try. The contrasting fabric looks great.
