Jacket pictures

After the initial muslin was made in July, the jacket is finally finished.

The selftimer pictures I took yesterday were all aweful, so I asked DD today to make them. I had quite a few issues with this fabric, which was difficult to work with. Though being the matchy-match type, the lines are not continuous in the sleeves, as I was a little short of fabric. I cut the sleeves later, thought I had quite enough, but not enough for plaid matching. I’m lucky it’s not a very distinctive plaid, so it’s not very visible.

Seeing the pictures I must check whether it’s just the way I stand: it looks like the buttons are not evenly postioned.I was convinced I sewed them on right.

I like the way this jacket is on jeans. It makes it a bit less formal.

In answer to what Robin said on my last pictures: all pieces were interfaced with fusible interfacing before proceeding with construction. The back stay is a piece of muslin cotton.
The shoulder stay was applied to the fusible interfacing for the front before applying it (the interfacing as you would use for a jacket for which no stabilizing interfacing was used).

This pattern is rated in the magazine with 3.5 dots. I checked a few Burda magazines, but couldn’t find a pattern with 4 dots. This one certainly qualifies I think: the band, welt pockets with flap, notched collar, bound buttonholes are all special. What does a pattern need with Burda to have 4 dots?

To conclude: I like this jacket very much, fabric and construction gave me some headaches and frustration at times, but it was well worth it. The ‘history’ of the jacket, my meeting with fellow bloggers in New York, and the fitting session with Kenneth King, makes it a special memory jacket.

  2. Beautiful!! Re the buttons, mine always look slightly crooked too - it may be because the diagonal buttonholes allow the front to slide slightly (?).

  5. Oh, Sigrid- this jacket looks spectacular. It is postively gorgeous. You are right, it works really well with jeans, but I am sure it is lovely paired with more formal separates. The curved lines are particularly flattering to you. I hope to finish my coat soon, that was fitted the same day in New York.
    Well done!

  6. It is really beautiful. Such wonderful work!

The only 4 dot burda jacket I've seen was leather - I wonder if that plays a part?

  7. Well done! Beautiful jacket. I think it's very brave to take on such a project but it surely was worth the effort. Your skills are amazing and very inspirational.

  8. I think your finished jacket deserves 4 dots, maybe even 5!

  9. Can we say fabulous?! The fit is perfect and it looks amazing on you. I love the contrast binding. Everything is beautifully done and if you didn't say anything none of us would know you had any headaches in sewing this.

  10. Cute! Cute! Cute! That will look great with lots of outfits!

But I do think you've sewn the top button on crookedly. Follow the black "stripe" across and the two top buttons are uneven relative to the plaid stripe.

    What a great piece!!

Thanks for reminding us that such results take time, lots of time.. I admire your ability to go make something else and then get back to the project, such perseverance. I tend to be afraid I'll never get back to it myself :-).

But the result is totally worthwhile, I"m sure you'll wear this a lot. It's good if it's a formal jacket that can go casual, you'll get much more use out of it this way. Good planning.

As to the buttons, don't worry. We all try to make the pictures more interesting by not standing so stiff, but the result is that things can look crooked when they're not. The cure would be to stand really stiff for the picture, and I think everyone likes it better this way. Do you see Burda magazine pictures with people standing stiffly to show you the details of the garments, eh?

  25. That jacket is absolutely fabulous! Perfect for dressing up or down, and I really like it with jeans. I do remember 4 dot patterns in Burda; maybe from the early 90's? If I remember to, I will check my collection.

  31. Oh wow, I loved this jacket when it was in the magazine, but yours is so much more gorgeous than that! The shape is perfect for you and I love it with the jeans.

BTW, the Karl Lagerfeld jacket in the current Burda has four dots. I haven't noticed too many 4 dots in the last three or four years, but that one caught my eye.
