That’s how about I feel about this little project. In the end I chose the plain knit fabric to work with, mainly because I had enough fabric of that to make a matching sleeveless top to wear with the cardigan I had in mind. I chose the Jalie pleated cardigan pattern, which I made before in a print. This time no print on the whole but only dots at the shawl collar. It doesn’t look too bad on the dressform, but it’s too much white on me and the fit is no good. This was not too clear in the my previous version. Because of the plain fabric the folds/pleats and too spacious back are very obvious now. It’s a very nice fabric, so I already started unpicking the pleats and I will use the fabric for something else. Live and learn. Just wanted to share the idea with you, which I still like, but could have better done in a darker fabric.
Live and learn, or should that be sew and learn. Sometimes you just don't know if something will work until you actually put it together, which is very frustrating. I wonder how many "mistakes" designers make before they roll out their collections for the world to see.
ReplyDeleteI have a tailored jacket that I made that I'll be picking apart. I liked the idea of the polka dots and solid.
ReplyDeleteIt does look good on the dressform, but I will take your word for it. I definitely like the idea you had though.
ReplyDeleteit does looks good on your dress form. We all have those projects so hopefully you can modify it to work for you.
ReplyDeleteBeen there. It goes UP from here......
ReplyDeleteI had a friend whose sewing father used to say 'as thou sews, thou shall rip'. (in the bible, sows and reaps..). If our ideas always translated to reality, the world would be a better place :-).
ReplyDeleteSeriously, you seemed to like the white fabric best, so maybe you can find a white or much lighter muslin that won't be such a contrast? White with small polka dots? It'll be a lot of unpicking but it'd be worth switching the collar.
And just take in the shoulders a bit? Did you stabilize the shoulder seam enough? And I'd think that lovely-on-its-own collar would make, if nothing else, a great scarf.
I'm sure your next project will be a smashing success, you always do so well..
It is a nice idea that looks great on the dress form. I'm sorry to hear that the "wearability" is unsuitable.
ReplyDeleteOh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. At least you tried it and can save some of the fabric for something else.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea and would like to try it, but probably not in white. Just made the Jalie cardigan for the first time and actually think I'l like to pinch out the pleats on the pattern. Is that what you plan to do to improve the fit?

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry it didn't turn out the way you imagined. We all have these projects. I'm sure the next project will be a winner again!
ReplyDeleteWhat a striking garment! Too bad it didn't work. It looks like that polka dots are a chiffon fabric?
ReplyDeleteSigrid, do you know how to locate past issues of KnipMode? There's very little on ebay (only the last two issues) and the KnipMode site itself doesn't go very far back either. Maybe there's some other venue I'm overlooking. :)
I should add that I'm looking for the September 2008 issue of KnipMode, in case your or anyone else knows where it can be found. :)
