I bought a dressform

On a Dutch site I found this second-hand dressform for sale, there already was someone who bid on it, but I was lucky my bid was accepted. I was near the seller today, and could pick it up in combination with a business trip.

The dressform is a size 40. On seeing the picture on the internet I already saw that she is too small in general, but that is not so important. I compared the sizes with the BWOF size chart and in bust and hips she is the same as the BWOF size 40. But the waist is 8 cm (more than 3 inches) smaller! My waist is certainly not that small!

But as my back is narrow it's correct in that area and I think I can adapt her to my bust size by putting on a bra. I've seen that done before on several sites. This means that I can use the dressform for blouses and jackets while working on it. The dressform will not be the main fitting instrument for me, just a helpful tool.

Speaking of tools: my serger crashed again! And I've decided to replace it. Too much irritation and time loss because of a badly behaving serger that is 16 years old. I'll be visiting one or two dealers tomorrow, and hopefully have a new serger in the weekend.

  1. Conmgrats on your dressform, it is easier to add a few cm at the waist then to remove.Fiberfil is a good choice to add.

  3. Hey, my serger is also about 16 years old and cranky as anything! But that darn budge--no money for a new serger at this time. But have fun shopping for one!

  5. Well, good luck with your search for a new serger and the new dressform. I have an old, half-broken one but even though it's barely hanging in, it is still better than having none. Padding is a good idea which gives you the choice of taken it off when needed.

  6. My dressform is smaller than me in some areas too, but I still love it for working with garments in progress.

  7. don't you just love a great sale? i've done that before. wonderful feeling. a couple of years ago there was an article in threads magazine about making your own dress form with 'duct tape'. you wear an old t-shirt and someone wraps the tape around you. well, with the help of my husband, i did it! it turned out okay. it's not on a stand like yours (just hanging)but it suits my purpose. i hope yours works out well.

  8. I would love someday to have a perfect double dress form (or maybe I don't want to see that), but my Acme Junior is still helpful, even though her waist is smaller than mine and her hips nonexistent. I think you'll like yours!

  9. Mine's not quite right, either. The shoulders and neck are not small enough and neither is the waist and she is supposed to be a petite! I do use it for photographing, for works in progress and for simple things, but for true fitting I use myself, of course.

  11. A new dressform! I wish I could find a place to buy dressforms here in Portugal; I had mine ordered from a mail catalog and it's ok, but some time I feel I could use a professional dressinform instead...
