Back to sewing

Hello again, it’s been a while since I did some sewing and blogging. Haven’t been on holiday all that time (of course) but my sewing mojo was completely gone and is only just returning. Yesterday evening I was suddenly triggered to sew a muslin of a Patrones top. It turned out to be too small and I did sew a second muslin.

I’m looking for a pattern for a top that I can use for woven fabrics and can be worn on its own or under a jacket. This pattern had my attention from the start.

This is the line drawing

The picture from the magazine (Patrones Joven number 5). Does really show the pattern don’t you think?

This is my muslin, the armhole had a little gaping which I pinned out.

The back.

To me it’s clear that this is not fitting as I would like. The front would need a little fba, but I don’t like the position of the darts. The back is not very good either, my bra straps (which are always on this position) show and would need some extra space as well.

All in all: not sure whether I’ll continue with this pattern, think I’m going to browse my Burda issues for a pattern for a non woven top to prevent another wadder. I have 1 meter of black silk I want to make a top of, and I’ve had enough wadders this year already.

  1. I'm sure you could tweak this to fit. The model photo is very loose fitting - not sure if this is design intention or just the waif-like model.

  2. Try the free download from Collette Patterns, the Sorbetto top. I normally have a lot of trouble fitting these types of tops but the Sorbetto is lovely and doesn't have any closures to worry about. Still might need a FBA though.

  3. I agree with Gail, this looks like a looser fit on the model than on you... I'm not saying that this can't work for you. I wonder if they made a size larger than her. I think you might try adding a little width on the back or doing a FBA.

  4. My first comment disappeared into the either, so I'll try again.
I think that you are right to look for something else. There are more problems than it's worth.

  5. A black silk top sounds really nice! Bummer this one didn't work out, but thank goodness it was just a muslin.

  6. I agree with Vanessa on the Sorbetto top! This one needs too many alterations and I am not sure that you will be happy with this pattern. Black silk sounds fantastic and you have so many possibilities to decorate it with pearls, small bows, taking off collar and so on.

  7. Welcome back!
I was going to siggest the Sorbetto too, a lot of people have had success with it and I´m on my way with it too!
I think I got your sewing mojo for a while...back on the tracks!

  8. I'm sure you could tweak it too, but I know what you mean, sometimes there are just too many little tweaks to make...
There is also Sewaholic's Pendrell Blouse - it looks more shaped than the Colette Sorbetto as it has princess seams, and is still slip on.

  9. What a shame there are so many problems. Nothing you can't fix but maybe not worth the effort. Good luck with the next one.

  10. When I'm making tops, I always start with my TNT pattern and remodel it to the stile I want. It's much easier to modify the openings (neck, arm) than to fit some pattern not made for myself.
TNTs are invaluble. No need for muslins, too.
    Hope this works for you.
