What was I thinking

Shannon from the blog Mushywear posted a picture of a fabric that she bought and now feels like “what was I thinking”. She wrote too “How about a challenge?  Pull it out and share what you come up with.  I'd love to see it!”.

I’m taking up the challenge. Here’s a picture of a knit print that I bought this spring and since it arrived (bought it online) thought “what was I thinking?” I might use it and see how it is on a pair of black pants, but still think it’s not my style. And anyhow, what pattern would you use for such a fabric?

  1. Ok, I'll bite, I think this pattern would be fun in McCalls 5752, http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m5752-products-7938.php?page_id=528

but I would use a solid black knit for the top, and the print for the waist gathered piece and skirt.

  2. LOL. I have a piece like that, so not me, but yours has better colors. I think that it's so busy that a simple top would work. I'd use some black for binding the neckline and maybe the wrists. A cowl neck might work, but this pattern will swallow any design details. If you decided to go with it as a skirt I'd pick one of the bolder colors in it for a top instead of black. With your figure you'd need to balance the print with a brighter color on top or you'll look bottom heavy. I think that it's a really pretty print, I just don't know if you'll actually wear it if you make it up, but only you can decide that.

  3. wow, that fabric has something for everyone! There is houndstooth, animal print...
I do like the colors a lot and I can see how this might look really good online and be much louder in person. I'd sew a knit top without a lot of details. Like Nancy says, it's so busy no one will see any design details. Maybe one of the Jalie knit top patterns? Something fast & easy! I bet you will get a lot of compliments when you wear it because it is so distinctive.

  4. What about one of the Three Graces crossover top that you made earlier? Heck- if it is going to be busy, why not add a few funky details to announce the fabric??
Too bad is not a charmeuse, it would make fabulous, loud lining!

  5. A wrap top or dress might just tame this beast. Whatever you do, keep it away from your face and high neck - a deep v or cross over front.

  6. Hmmm . . . it's not too bad. It could make a nice tunic ala Gigi or a simple knit dress or top without too much detail, just let that fabric speak for itself. I think AllisonC does some great simple dresses with interesting prints.

  7. I think it would make a really fun lining! :) (I love wild linings...)

  8. Dear Sigrid,

I'm not a fan of the print either and I would make it into a full longish skirt, probably mid-calf length, and would wear it with simple, small top. I want such busy print to stay away from my face. But that's just me. I would love to know what you later decide to make it.

    Regards,

  9. I like fabrics with unusual prints and I do like the colors in this fabric. I also think a top would be nice, worn with a black cardigan or black jacket.

  10. Either a simple wrap dress or maybe even the not so simple Three Graces top you gave to your daughter. I like how the fabric is draping on your dressform. Even though some of the detail may be lost, I think it will still look very nice.

  11. Wow Sigrid, I thought my fabric was wild. Your's takes the cake. But I have to say I love the colorway. It's truly a melting pot of prints and colors. I am going to have to think about how I might use something like that before I could recommend a pattern! It will be so fun to see what you come up with!

  12. I think a very simple cardigan could work,as you can break the colours at the front with say a plain tee shirt or blouse underneath

  13. Oh I think this fabric is just terrible for you. Feel free to send it to me so you won't have to deal with it. muah haha haha.

  14. It's very... present, indeed. But I kind of like it. I think I would make a drapey top with it, with a wide neck. I would wear it on some dark toned trousers. I think that could be very elegant! I look forward to seeing what you'll decide!

  15. It's very dramatic and very strong. It says a lot on it's own, so doesn't need much design or even seams. Love the idea of a great shawl with black pants and turtleneck under and clunky earrings & necklace, could really sing.

  16. I like the fabric more as I look at it. I also like the way you draped it on the dress form. I see this as a wrap dress or top (such as S2369). If you really don't want to wear it, using it as lining is a great idea. I love different and bold linings.

  17. Did you tell us what the knit is made of - rayon, poly, cotton, silk, with/without lycra, etc? if so, I missed it. I go with the basic tee-style tops - if you have enough, both sleeveless & long sleeved. The Jalie sweetheart top is super-flattering. Love the patterns & colour scheme, perfect to wear with just about anything!

  18. Oh, wait a minute, what about Burda Style 111, 9/10. They show it in a comparable print. I think you were thinking of making this one already. It will certainly be right in keeping with Milans Spring collections of bright mixed prints.i

  19. The fabric looks gorgeous! A simple top, maybe some gathers if you like them, maybe a bow or scarf collar if you like it, or maybe make a collared and buttoned knit shirt. Binding a t-shirt with black or any of the other colors could look nice. Or you could make a raglan t-shirt and use one of the solid colors for sleeves or the body. Another option is a polo collar and placket in a solid color.
