New fabrics

My new lycra fabrics and lace that I bought at Kantje boord last week. The grey on the right has silver threads through it whith a little shine, the lace is perfect with it, though the picture does not reflect that.

And this is the bra I'm making, still not completely finished. I gave my garden priority this weekend. And there were some other priorities too.

Not my usual fabric/lace combination, but I've seen something like that (really don't remember where and when) and just wanted to try. The plaid is lycra!

Kat was very kind in her comments, suggesting that I should give a class. Well, that's not exactly on my mind, as I'm not a sewing teacher, and more important, I'm not a fit-expert. But it brought back an idea that I have since quite a while: how about a lingerie sew-along, for example in May/June? What I'm thinking of is the kind of sew along that Marji organized last year for a coat. In a separate blog, only to be viewed by participants? Making a panty and a bra? Perhaps draw the panty I showed in my post of last week to your own measurements? I think the number of participants must be limited, to keep the feeling of a sew-along and for me to be able to follow and help along the way.

A difficult point is that fabrics and notions are so difficult to get for a lot of you. There I could perhaps help too, but shipping costs for a package outside Europe is at least 11 Euro (for a standard, untrackable package).

What are your thoughts on this? Would you be interested in such a sew-along? What would you expect it to cover and do you have any other suggestions?

  1. Hi. I'd be very interested in participating in a lingerie sew-along. Types of patterns, styles of bras, fabric, elastic, and notions would be great to discuss, along with fitting issues. Thank you for suggesting this sew-along!

  2. I would participate in a lingerie sew-along. I've had my bra patterns and fabric and notions piled together for a while now, I don't know what's keeping me from starting (except maybe the other 30 projects on my to-do list). It would be a nice place to share sources, links to tutorials, and most of all provide moral support.

  3. That would be awesome!

BTW, for those of us in the US, you can buy bra kits for either Elan or Kwik-Sew patterns, from Sew Sassy. Here's the URL, you'll see the kits in the list on the left in the middle section. http://www.sewsassy.com/BraProducts/BraProducts.html That way, people can order a complete kit and have everything they need to at least try bra making.

  4. Adding that the patterns are not included in the kits, but the kits are convienent for all the little supplies.

  5. I like the combo of the suiting and lace. And, I think I would particiapte in a sew along. I still have stuff just to do underwear.

  6. I would love to be part of a lingerie sew-along. The local fabric store (Sydney Australia) is a distributor for Kwik-Sew and I have noticed they have some bra supplies (sold separately). I also have some of the Lutterhol lingerie patterns for panties, cammy, full and half slips.

  7. I would absolutely LOVE to jump on board for a lingerie sew along. I would mainly be looking for an excuse to finally buy everything I need to get started and then for fitting issue help (RTW bras on me are hopeless). Sounds like fun!

  8. I've never made a bra. I've sewn other lingerie years ago. This is the first plaid lingerie fabric I've ever seen. It's unique! A sew along sounds great!

  9. Sigrid,
I have been reading your blog during my spring break. I love sewing t-shirts and skirts. I am eager to try sewing lingerie but am busy until the end of April with an online science teaching class. By May I will be ready for something lacy! Please count me in. I am in Chicago.

  11. I would be interested in a sewalong for a bra and panty set. I know I could do it...there are just so many great things to sew...I just haven't done it yet!

  12. I am not interested in a sew along, but I do love your new bra! I posted a link to your tutorial blog, which is really pretty these days, to some women on PR who were talking about what patterns to use for making underwear.
The last two weekends have been gardening weekends here too. We have to start spraying for deer already too. We've had more deer in the yard than I've seen in the 23 years we've been here. We had 4 in the back yard Saturday, nearly up on the deck. Just staring at us. Big, fat happy looking deer. The dog, alas is just too old to chase them any more.

  13. Sigrid,
I just love your lingerie. I've made some lingerie in the past (nothing to your high standard) and would be interested in a sew-along especially to work on fit issues - the sewing side is fine.

  14. I would be very interested in a lingerie sewalong. I'm plus size and can never find matching bra and panties. I would be jumping ofr joy to be able to make my own.

  15. Very pretty fabrics! A sew-a-long sounds like fun. I really don't need to make bras as RTW fit so well, but a nice cami and panties would be great. And they are so expensive.

  16. Can I participate as well Sigrid? And Iwonder what you are going to make of that gorgeous red lycra, :-)

  20. I'll save the sewalong spaces for others, but I just wanted to say how much I like your lace placement on that bra! It remind me of Wonder Woman's lightning bolts, full of power...

  22. I'm a frequent visitor to your blog and I'd love to join the sew-along. Last summer I attended a bra workshop taught by Anne St. Clair owner of Needle Nook fabrics. Our kits had enough supplies for three bras. I finished one in class but never made the other two. Tari in MI

  23. A lingerie sew-along would be great!

I have been wanted to make lingerie for a long time. A friend and I made an attempt a couple of months ago. We both ordered a bra-kit online. My friend ordered a kit from elingeria and I bought one from English Couture company:

    http://www.englishcouture.co.uk/

The notions in my kit were better quality than the ones from elingeria though I didn't care for the fabric in the kit. The shipping was much less than stated on English couture company's home page (shipped to Denmark) and the kit arrived pretty fast.

  24. A sew along would be fun. Your lingerie has been soooo inspirational. I have purchased kits from elingeria.de too. The kits have been of good quality and the seller has been very friendly and helpful. It's a shame shipping is so expensive (I'm in New Zealand).
For people at this side of the world: boobytraps.com.au in Australia also sells kits. I prefer the elingeria ones but the fabrics are all stetch and I'd prefer firmer ones for my size. It has taken me about 4 bras to get something reasonable. It could still have a few refinements. Anyway, I really appreciate all the work you put into your blog -Thanks :-)

  25. Thanks Andrea, Booby Trap in Australia sounds like a great local place for me to start, especially as this is my first attempt. I'm definitely joining the group now I can get hold of a kit and really looking forward to the sew-along, inspired by Sigrid's experience and wonderful bra making skills. Sigrid you bras are just lovely!

The sew-alongs are such a good idea - I'm doing the jeans sew-along at the moment and really enjoying it.

  26. I would like to sew along. Maybe I could do a better job at lingerie than in the coat sew along! Plus I have some fabric ready to go!

  27. I'd love to participate in a lingerie sew-along! I have quite a lot of underwear supplies on hand, and reasonable access to a store that has quite a lot of bra making stuff.

  28. Well you already know I'm good to go for the lingerie sew along :) ! Just making it "official" here.

  29. Great idea. I think I would participate too.
